Exploring Barcelona city

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Monday, June 16, 2014

We devoted today to exploring Barcelona, especially Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926), Spanish architect and figurehead of Catalan Modernism. We walked around the extraordinary but still unfinished Sagrada Familia Basilica. From there we took the hop-on hop-off bus and walked a steep uphill to the amazing fairytale Park Guell, one of the most impressive public parks in the world. Originally it was intended as a residential park for Eusebi Guell’s residential project but the project failed. It remains one of Gaudi’s most colorful and playful works.

We took a long ride on the bus, criss-crossing Barcelona. Maryln and I had a wonderful lunch on top of a five-story shopping center, enjoying stunning full-circle views of the city, while Herb and Judy explored Las Rambla.

In the evening, we were enthralled by an original Flamenco show performed in Tablao Cordobes, and credited by a specially formed board of standards. An extensive buffet with 65 extremely tasty components for starter, main course and dessert was served in a separate dining room in the tablao, a recreated Andalusian vaulted cellar hall. What an evening!
