Spain, Portugal and Basque France Adventure 2014

End of the journey

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands
Saturday, August 2, 2014

From Valencia we headed to Barcelona and pulled in for lunch at Cambrils de Mar, a picturesque little port renowned for its good eating places. Within five minutes,

we found a picturesque restaurant on the harbor front. We stopped in a metered public parking zone, close to the beach and a family picnic area.

Unfortunately, during these few minutes, on this very last day before heading home and in broad daylight, our rental car was broken into and all the hand luggage stolen. I would have liked not to mention it at all but I believe in being honest and it is important to raise awareness of the crime situation in Spain.

Sadly, Spain is experiencing unprecedented levels of theft, probably due to the current financial situation and increasingly high unemployment in the country, as well as an increase in international criminal gangs operating in the country. It is unfortunate that despite our alertness and precautions, we fell victim to crime.

In spite of this set-back, we had a fabulous road trip, saw many wonderful sites, met some great people, experienced many memorable moments, stayed at charming accommodations and enjoyed a wide variety of delicious food and wine.

Having had such an inclusive tour, I am already planning a streamlined 10 – 12 day trip to Spain incorporating the highlights.
